Ku·mo — 雲
meaning "cloud" in Japanese
Kumo is a smart mask that streamlines your breathing experience. It filters out dust, pollen, virus particles and pollution. Paired with the app, Kumo lets you track your breathing rate and view the particles you are exposed to in your day-to-day environments.
In the COVID pandemic, masks have become one of the lifestyle changes everyone has had to adapt to. Current mask options however lack the ability to accommodate for everyone, such as those with lunge deficiencies. As an essential part of living, suitable mask options should be available for all.
How might we provide a mask suited for everyone, both inside and outside of the covid pandemic?
We first took a look at why mask wearing is beneficial, inside and outside of the COVID-pandemic.
Using our research findings, we created three user personas that help guide us in designing for their specific needs and goals. We father summarize our intentions of out product in out PACT Analysis.
Here, we researched and identified various key problems with existing popular mask options.
Once we have defined our problem and audience, we moved forward with a MoSCoW into converting data points into possible features. Data outlined in GREEN was further developed into the final product.
Creating a navigation map gave us a holistic view of the entire application and how the user flows would function.

This feature tracks and notifies users whenever a mask comes in contact with COVID-19 particles as well as recommend the user next steps. This feature also allows users to monitor cases and hotspots in the area.
Kumo was a very fun and great learning experience as it was my first time working on a physical product with a companion application. With the project being designed remotely, due to CONVID-19, we had to do a lot of guerilla testing with family and friends. By doing this we were able to quickly see what features were viable as apposed to traditional user testing.
With a diverse team of designers with different backgrounds and skill sets we were able to take advantage and lean into everyone’s strengths. By doing this we were able to elevate Kumo much more than we had initially planned. A key teamwork takeaway in the importance of getting the team on the same page for team cohesion throughout the process.
